How to Deal with Risks to Your Data with Backup Solutions

Monday, August 9th, 2010

“31% of PC users have lost all of their files due to events beyond their control.”
-University of North Carolina’s Information Technology Service

Would you rather spend half an hour once, and a few minutes a week or spend hundreds of hours and rebuild all of your data?  This is the decision many must face when they have valuable data stored on their computers.  Backing up important data is essential.  It is yet another situation where a small amount of effort over a long time span will reap long-term rewards.

We saw a Louisiana company move to Birmingham when they had to start all over because their data was wiped out by hurricane Katrina.  To prevent your important information from being wiped out in one fell swoop, we will transmit your data to our local facility and our Mississippi facility, or servers in multiple states.  We are able to move your data securely with multiple internet connections in case one goes down, and once your data is moved off site, it is stored in our secure SAS 70 facility.

Disasters are not the only threat to your data’s security however.  Thieves often seek out electronics, and if your computer is stolen your backup drive very well might be too.  Losing your data by means of theft is a very real possibility.  For example, one of our clients once left a laptop on a plane after arriving, and by the time he realized his laptop was misplaced it was too late.  Fortunately, we had backed up his data so that even though everything he needed for his business was stored on his missing laptop, we held a backup copy of the data so his business was back up and running the next day.

Burglars aren’t the only individuals that pose a threat to your data- hackers and viruses often try to break in to people’s computers through the internet in order to steal your data.  Did you know that your name, phone number, address, and other personal information can be bought and sold as if it was a commodity?  This practice offers a dangerous cash incentive for people to break into your computer.   Often times, this will involve installing spyware on your computer, which can be just as destructive to the rest of your data as a virus.  The risk of your data being destroyed by those trying to make a buck by breaking into your computer is very real.  Our CAP-IT Complete program includes 4gb of off-site backup.

If you’ve ever replaced a broken cell phone, you know how much of a hassle it is to get all your contacts, appointments, photos and other information restored to your next phone.  Just like with computers however, this can be avoided by taking steps to back up your data.  Phone applications like Google Sync and Lookout Mobile can back up things like your contacts, calendars, pictures and more; whether you have an iPhone, Android, Windows Mobile phone, Blackberry, or Symbian phone, there is a backup solution for your needs.  If you have an older, Java enabled phone, there are backup applications for you too, such as MobileBackup.  If your phone is not Java enabled, you are limited to backing up your contacts to your SIM card, which is still a very good idea.

Odds are that if you use your computer on a regular basis for more than just web browsing, you have something stored on it that you cannot easily replace.  Where do you keep the photos you have taken with your digital camera?  Are they safe?  What about music?  Home movies?  Documents?  That memory card you store your photos on is great for storing pictures, but not so great for storing them long term.  Cameras and memory cards are very fragile devices, and can be damaged extensively by being dropped, broken (they are wafer thin), power surges, static electricity, disaster and other accidents.  Backing up photos by burning them to a CD is easy; it will last for decades and we can do it for you at a reasonable rate.  Speaking of burning, if you are as concerned about disasters as our corporate clients are, you might want to take advantage of our off-site backup services as well, or let us manage all of your computer issues with our CAP-IT Complete program.

If you ever need any sort of help with data backup, or more information, feel free to let us know.
