Small companies have big computer needs

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

In today’s economy, many companies are looking for better cheaper ways to do things in their business. Companies are cutting hours, staff, budgets but need to increase revenue and profit at the same time. Things need to be done differently with little to no additional cost – even with a reduction in costs. All this sounds good; now tell me something I didn’t know.

Things you used to have to do with your employees can now be done remotely, even on your system. VPN (Virtual Private networks) are now available to small businesses and allow you to work from anywhere safely, www.elance.com is a great resource to allow you to get work done without hiring an employee, or even a temp. Network monitoring, reporting and maintenance can keep your systems running better and more effectively for less. Twitter, Facebook, Blogs, etc are free ways to get your message out to your prospective customers. Websites allow you to tell your story to your prospects so they are able to “buy” with little to no input from you or your sales force.

The economy is driving automation and ingenuity. Business owners that keep their heads and do not panic have a great opportunity to capitalize and grow in this time of conflict. Focus, research, look around, you will be surprised at what you find.

Great new tool for small businesses with big projects

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

For years I have been working with small businesses on various issues. When they have a new project they want accomplished the e-mails begin. We start by defining the project and sending e-mails back and forth until we have an understanding of the scope and the price.

Once the project is defined, we have others that may get involved at different levels dealing with programming, design, content and many other areas. The e-mails continue to fly and things begin to get lost. Someone was to do something and they missed the e-mail or forgot about it. The same thing gets mentioned over and over again and tempers begin to increase.

This continues until the project is finished or abandoned. People get blamed and hopefully everyone gets paid and the customer gets their project completed.

There is a better way, SharePoint services. For those in larger companies, you probably know this and have probably used it to some extent. But for smaller companies, they usually have not heard of it.

SharePoint is a very powerful tool that can benefit all involved by giving everyone a central place on the Internet where everyone can see the information and add as needed to the process. For small companies we now offer this service. I will write more about this in later blogs.
